crater of life
“a cycling, walking, boating adventure”
We travel to a village that is far removed from the average Balinese way of life with a history that dates back over 1,000 years.
We first travel through Bali to Kintamani and down into the volcano crater to the shores of Mt Batur.
Here we will be met by our cycling guides where we will take an easy cycle around the edge of Lake Batur to the village of Trunyan. Lake Batur is one of the main food bowls to Bali, the
rich volcanic soil allows the growing of many vegetables including corn, and cabbage. On arrival at Trunyan village which was founded over 1,000 years ago and is unique in many ways
not just for Bali but worldwide as it is here that the people don’t actually bury the dead.
On arrival at Trunyan we will go for a short walk around the village until we come to a small jetty where our boat awaits.
The small boat will take us around 100metres from the village to a large sandalwood tree; here is where the village lays the bodies of the deceased under the giant sandalwood tree. The
story is that only married people can be treated this way and there can only be 11 bodies at any one time at this site. It is a very interesting insight into a culture far removed from our own and that little has changed for over 1,000 years. There is no smell or gruesome sights just a fascinating glimpse and a very unique culture and practice.
We depart from the sandalwood tree and travel by boat across the lake to a floating restaurant for lunch.
After lunch we will return to your villa.
Pickup from your villa is @0730 and you will return around 1700.
